Sphinx WeeCap

Good morning Sphinxers! It’s already been a while, but I would still like to present to you the recap of Sphinx D-Day. In other words, it’s time for another #SphinxWeeCaps !!!

Saturday 8-4 12:00 | BV Sphinx DS1 – Twente Buzzards (63 – 49)
Sonia: Last game promised to be interesting since we lost the away game against this team. We started winning by 12 with a good offense and defense, but then they reached us and were close to the score. We still had a lead of about 5 points in the halftime. Both teams played with intensity trying to win the last game. Their press made us nervous and it was difficult to score, but when we organized our play, we managed to make a good difference in the score. It was a nice way to finish the league being second! And thank you for your support.

Saturday 8-4 14:00 | BV Sphinx HS1 – BV Batouwe HS2 (100 – 62)
Easy win for men’s 1st. In between the exciting games of the ladies and men’s 2nd, we had a less important matchup against a team from the bottom of our league. Despite that they started quite strong, it became soon clear that we were going to win this game with relative ease. This reflected on our concentration, especially in defense, and therefore we allowed them to score way too many points, namely 62. This was not really a problem since we found our rhythm offensively, leading to us scoring a season-high of 100 points. Conclusion: not a pretty game but eventually a solid W.

Saturday 8-4 16:00 | BV Sphinx HS2 – Black Stars HS1 (64 – 50)
Last Saturday in the last and most important game of the season Sphinx HS2 had to overcome one more time the tough team from Rhenen (Black Stars) in order the players of Wageningen’s University team become Champions! The game started with Sphinx leading in the score finding free shots against the zone defense of Black Stars! The team from Rhenen achieved to approach the score but not to take the lead due to the good and determined defense of Sphinx’s players! The end of the game found us to win the game by 14 points and celebrate the Championship for the first time in our history! Sphinx HS2 Champions 2016-2017!

Once again thank you all for the support, it was a perfect ending to an amazing season for us.

Last weekend two home games were played by both our Men’s and Ladies’ First team! Let’s see how everything worked out for them, it’s time for another #SphinxWeeCaps!!

Friday 24-3 19:00 | BV Sphinx DS1 – Landstede Basketbal ZAC DS2 (66 – 30)
Sonia: Although we didn’t play well, we won 66-30. We started playing too slow basketball. We knew that the opponent was the last in the league, but instead of destroying them from the first minute, we adapted to their slow play. We scored very few points in the first half and our defense wasn’t intense. But the shouts of coach Patinios in the half-time were useful and the game changed. We improved our offense and defense in the third quarter. And in the last quarter we played like we know and we scored 26 points.

Friday 24-3 21:00 | BV Sphinx HS1 – JRC HS1 (79 – 58)
Sphinx Men’s 1st seems back on track in win against JRC Boxtel. Friday evening we played JRC Boxtel at home. Since we played horrible and lost the away game against them, we were very eagered to win this game. We started sharp and by playing intense defense we took an early lead. We managed to hold on to this lead throughout the first half, which made that we had a lead of about 15 points at halftime. The second half we started sloppy, allowing them to get back in the game. However, after some timeouts we got it back together and played out the game with relative ease. Final score: 79-58

Slowly but surely we are approaching the end of the season, and it’s proving to be a successful year once again! Three away games were played last weekend, let’s see what our coaches and players had to say about it: (spoiler alert: all wins!)

Saturday 18-3 14:00 | SV Twello HS1 – Sphinx HS2 (43 – 63)
Giannis: Sphinx HS2 won again this weekend; this time against SV Twello HS1! The game started ideally for our team ending the first quarter with score 20-1!!! However, for the rest of the game the opponent team changed its defense from man to man to zone which made us nervous in offense finding not easy way to the basket! Although the team from Twello was hoping to reach us in the score the score difference that we built in the first quarter allowed us to control the pace of the game! The final buzzer found us winning another game by 20 points!

Saturday 18-3 18:00 | B.V. Isala DS 1 – Sphinx DS1 (30 – 75)
Sonia: Just looking at the score (30 – 75) it is clear that it was an easy game for Sphinx ladies. We started strong, without letting the opponent score. Then, they improved and began to score some points (still without reaching us). They also tried to stop us with different defenses. But we played much better (including stealing the ball, fast breaks, layups and 3-pointers), so we destroyed them. We all enjoyed the game and our intensity didn’t go down. Our communication is getting better, and this is reflected in a good defense and coordinated offense.

Sunday 19-3 14:00 | BV Wyba HS2 – Sphinx HS1 (74 – 86)
Bram: A W for Sphinx Men’s 1st in Wijchen. After two consecutive losses, Men’s 1st was eager to turn things around against Wyba Hs2 from Wijchen (next to Nijmegen). They stood rather low in the ranking, but from the previous game we knew they were not a bad team and besides that, we were only with 7 players so we did not expect an easy game. We started therefore sharp, quickly building a lead of about 15 points by sharing the ball a lot and playing active defense. However, in the second quarter our defense and defensive rebounding began to slack, but because of our offense we clanged onto the 15 point lead at halftime. In the second half we had a phase of inconsistent play, allowing the lead to be reduced to single digits, but the W never came in jeopardy. The final score was 74-86. Highly notable was the outstanding performance of Damiël, scoring a game-(and probably season-)high 40 points! Coming Friday we are looking to continue our winning streak at home against JRC.

This weekend will be packed with home games! On Friday, both the Men’s and Ladies first will play at respectively 19:00 and 21:00. Both teams are in the top regions of the competition, and are looking to sustain their position or even trying to move up the ladder! On Saturday, the highlight of the weekend will be taking place. At 14:00, Sphinx HS2 will play their championship against the runner-up, WSV Apeldoorn! It’s going to be a hard-fought game, please be there to show your support! Go Sphinx!!!
